Service

Service Intervals

After Each Use	· Tighten the hardware.
Before the Season and Every 10 Hours	· Lubricate the auger bail. · Lubricate the idler arm.
Before the Season and Every 25 Hours	· Check and gap the spark plug.
As Necessary	· Adjust the belt tension. · Replace the belt and adjust the cable spring. · Replace the scraper blade. · Free the auger cable.

Service Record

Engine Warranty Maintenance Statement

Maintenance, repair, or replacement of the emission control devices and systems on this engine, which are being done at the customers expense, may be performed by any nonroad engine repair establishment or individual. Warranty repairs must be performed by an authorized John Deere dealer.

Engine Oil

Mix oil and gasoline according to instructions.

The following oil is preferred:

· John Deere TWO-CYCLE ENGINE OIL

Other oils may be used if above preferred John Deere oil is not available, provided they meet one of the following specifications:

· SAE Standard J2116 or Classifications TA, TB, TC, or TD

· API Classification TC or higher

· NMMA Classifications TC-W or TC-WII or higher

JASO Classifications FA, FB, or FC or higher

Fuel

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Handle fuel with care, it is highly flammable:

· DO NOT refuel machine while you smoke, when machine is near an open flame or sparks, or when engine is running. STOP engine.

· Fill fuel tank outdoors.

· Prevent fires: clean oil, grease and dirt from machine. Clean up spilled fuel immediately.

· Do not store machine with fuel in tank in a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.

· To prevent fire and explosion caused by static electric discharge, while you fill tank, use a non-metal fuel container. If you use a funnel, MAKE SURE it is PLASTIC. Avoid using a funnel which has a metal screen or filter.

· Use only clean oil and fuel and clean approved containers and funnels.

· Store oil and fuel in an area protected from dust, moisture and other contamination.

Unleaded fuel is recommended. Regular leaded gasoline with an anti-knock index of 87 or higher may also be used, but the unleaded fuel will burn cleaner and leave less unburned deposits in the combustion chamber. DO NOT use fuel that has been stored for a long time.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! John Deere does not recommend the use of alcohol blended fuels (such as ethahol or methanol gasohol) in 2-cycle engines. The use of these fuels may cause premature engine wear or failure. However, use of alternative oxygenated, gasohol blended, unleaded gasoline is acceptable as long as the ethyl or grain alcohol blends DO NOT exceed 10% by volume or methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) blends DO NOT exceed 15% by volume.

John Deere recommends the use of non-alcohol gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher mixed with John Deere 2-cycle oil at a 50:1 ratio (not available in Canada). DO NOT use other brands of oil when using a 50:1 mix.

Other brands of 32:1 oil are acceptable, if they meet BIA certification for TC-W service. Only use oils that are BIA certified.

Mixing Fuel

DO NOT mix fuel in machine fuel tank.

1. Fill container with half of the gasoline.

2. Add all the oil. Fasten lid.

3. Shake mixture.

4. Pour in remaining gasoline.

5. Shake mixture.

Filling Fuel Tank

1. Remove fuel cap (A).

2. DO NOT fill tank to top; fuel can expand.

3. Fasten fuel cap.

4. Wipe off any spilled fuel.

Grease

Use grease based on the expected air temperature range during the service interval.

The following greases are preferred:

· John Deere Moly High Temperature EP Grease.

· John Deere High Temperature EP Grease.

· John Deere GREASE-GARD.

Other greases may be used are:

· SAE Multipurpose EP Grease with 3 to 5 percent molybdenum disulfide.

· SAE Multipurpose EP Grease.

MIF

· Greases meeting Military Specification MIL-G-10924C may be used as arctic grease.

Lubricating the Auger Bail

1. Apply oil to the pivot point (A) on each side.

2. Wipe off the excess oil.

Lubricating the Idler Arm

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! DO NOT get oil on the belt or pulleys.

1. Remove the six screws (A) and belt cover (B).

2. Apply a drop of oil to the idler arm at point (C).

3. Pivot the auger bail up and down several times.

4. Wipe off the excess oil.

5. Install the cover.

Cleaning and Gapping Spark Plug

c CAUTION: Avoid injury!

· STOP the engine. Wait for it to cool.

· DO NOT clean the plug with abrasives.

1. Remove the fuel tank cap.

2. Remove the five screws (A) and shroud (B). Install the cap.

3. Disconnect the plug wire (C).

4. Remove the spark plug (D).

5. Carefully scrape or wire brush the carbon from the plug.

6. Inspect the plug for damage: cracks, pits, etc. Replace a damaged plug.

7. Adjust the gap: 0.8 mm (0.030 in.).

8. Install and tighten the plug.

9. Install the shroud.

10. Install the fuel tank cap.

Adjusting Carburetor

NOTE: The carburetor is calibrated by the engine manufacturer and should not require any adjustments.

NOTE: If engine is operated at altitudes above 1829 m (6,000 ft.), some carburetors may require a special high altitude main jet. See your John Deere dealer.

NOTE: Possible engine surging will occur at high rpm when the machine is in neutral ('N') and the auger is disengaged. This is a normal condition due to the emission control system.

If engine is hard to start or runs rough, check the TROUBLESHOOTING section of this manual.

After performing the checks in the troubleshooting section and your engine is still not performing correctly, contact your John Deere dealer.
